A “day in the life” as an IT Support Specialist at Aventus IT Solutions
My name is Harvinder Kumar and I am a Technical Support Specialist at Aventus IT Solutions, which is an IT Services company based in Birmingham. We’ve been helping different businesses with their IT support since 2006. I have been in this field since 2014, gaining experience in both full time and part time roles.
I work a classic 9 to 5, but our team still keeps an eye on things outside those hours in case something urgent comes up.. A typical day involves managing support tickets, monitoring device performance, reporting any outages, and identifying potential business development opportunities.
I work closely with my team and senior staff on day‑to‑day enquiries and support clients directly with their technical issues and troubleshooting needs.
My role is quite varied because I never know exactly what issues will arise each day. However, I can usually predict what issues may occur, particularly after server installations or cyber security related events.
I enjoy the logical flow of resolving technical problems, I find itsatisfying. I also like that my work makes a positive difference in our clients’ day and helps to remove disruption so they can get on with their work without stressing about IT.
A key challenge is when troubleshooting does not immediately resolve an issue, which sometimes means escalating tickets for more in depth investigation. Clients can occasionally be frustrated with this, so staying calm, clear, and patient is essential.
My route into technical support began with studying IT at Level 2 and Level 3 BTEC, which gave me a solid grounding in the technical fundamentals. These qualifications were helpful when entering the industry, as employers often look for relevant training or certifications. I also had existing connections in the sector, which helped me get my foot in the door.
In this role, I always advise colleagues to be clear with people about what you can do, and don’t take it personally if someone gets annoyed, particularly in a support role where people may be stressed or under pressure.
It is also important to stay aware of what is happening in the industry, as the IT landscape changes quickly and being informed helps you stay adaptable. For example, with cyber threats on the rise, , good cyber security matters more than ever, and it’s something I help with in my role.
For many young people, it is hard to imagine a life outside of school. They are unaware of the many jobs available to them and even when they know about them, they don’t necessarily know what that job entails on a day-to-day basis.
Blogs like Harvinder’s above showcase what is possible and challenges assumptions and stereotypes. If you too would like to share your career journey or what a day in your job looks like, please get in touch.
