From curiosity to confidence: Young people explore careers in insurance at Lloyd’s

In 2024, we partnered with Lloyd’s, the world’s leading marketplace for insurance and reinsurance, to help young people from state schools and colleges explore careers in the insurance industry.

For some young people, particularly those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, professional industries can seem nebulous and inaccessible. We are working to change that by connecting students with relatable role models and creating meaningful experiences of the world of work. These experiences are vital for helping young people build confidence, develop skills, and find their path to success.

Lloyd’s Insight Day

As part of the partnership, Lloyd’s hosted an Insight Day in October 2025 for students to discover what working in insurance is really like. Through interactive workshops and conversations with Lloyd’s employees, students gained an inside view of the sector, learning about its diverse roles and the many pathways into the industry.

“Our charitable partnership with Future First supports social mobility through education,” said Rachel Packer, Partnership and Fundraising Manager at Lloyd’s, “The Insight Day achieves this by engaging our employees in meaningful volunteering while offering young people a chance to see themselves in careers they may never have considered before.”

The goals of the event were two-fold: to inspire students to think ambitiously about their futures and to provide Lloyd’s volunteers with an opportunity to share their experiences, develop mentoring skills, and reflect on the impact of their work.

The day exceeded expectations. Students were highly engaged and eager to learn about the breadth of opportunities available to them. “They were very curious and asking some fantastic questions!”, said Rachel.

One student said: “I learned how many different roles and branches for a role there are”, while another reflected: “I was able to network with people related to the industry I want to go into. It gave me a lot of insight but also valuable knowledge.”

Rachel concluded: “If you are an employer looking to build diverse talent pipelines for early careers opportunities, working with Future First is a great way to make meaningful connections with young people, teachers and local schools”.

Feedback from both students and staff highlighted the power of such experiences to change perspectives. When young people are given meaningful encounters with the world of work, they begin to understand what’s possible and to see that success is within their reach.
